Board feet: nominal vs. actual dimensions

The unit measures volume; billing depends on the dimension basis.

One board foot equals 144 cubic inches: a 1 × 12 × 12 inch piece. Thickness and width in inches are commonly combined with length in feet, dividing the product by 12. Dressed lumber may be smaller than its nominal designation. Enter the supplier-required basis and retain that label in the report. Log-rule board feet estimating yield are not directly equivalent to physical log volume.

Reset example

Five boards of 1.25 × 10 inches and 8 feet: 5 × 1.25 × 10 × 8 / 12 = 41.6667 BF.
